Chlorine Dioxide
Products
Introduction
Chlorine dioxide is a chemical compound used to target pathogenic micro-organisms and disinfect water. Chlorine dioxide’s biocidal ability is caused by its very strong oxidising power, which enables it to disinfect water supplies in a broad range of conditions. Applications include potable water disinfection, Legionella control, industrial water treatment, cooling towers, food production, industrial waste and sewage water disinfection. Even at low concentrations chlorine dioxide is an effective oxidising agent and is active over a wide pH range, providing an effective disinfectant to water systems.
Chlorine dioxide is the only biocide agent that is a molecular free radical; it only reacts with materials that give off an electron. Therefore, due to the electron donating properties of many organic substances, chlorine dioxide will react and attack the membranes and cells of any microbes from the water supply. Due to its strong oxidising potential, it successfully kills pathogenic micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses, keeping water systems sterile and clear of biofilms.
In its pure form, chlorine dioxide exists at room temperature as a gas and dissolves sparingly in water.
Chlorine dioxide can be used in combination with systems to stop biological growth proliferating, and is a cost-effective solution, with the added advantage that it produces less harmful by-product’s than chlorine.

Product Overview
Water disinfection is of great importance in all buildings with drinking water consumption, and particularly in buildings that supply shower and bathing facilities. Water disinfection is also essential in applications where water mist is sprayed into the air, for instance cooling towers and evaporative condensers.
Chlorine dioxide is an oxide of chlorine with two oxygen atoms (ClO2) with a completely different behaviour compared to hypochlorite or chlorine gas. It does not react with water, but dissolves physically. Chlorine dioxide kills micro-organisms in the water by way of irreversible oxidative destruction of the transport proteins in the living cells. Due to it's high redox potential, chlorine dioxide has a much more powerful disinfection ability against all kinds of germs and contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and algae, than other biocides. Chlorine dioxide's higher oxidising potential compared to chlorine results in significantly less chemical usage per unit volume of treated water. Micro-organisms that are resistant to traditional chlorine, for example, Legionella, can be eliminated by using chlorine dioxide.
The Oxiperm Pro systems produce chlorine dioxide using diluted solutions of sodium chlorite (NaClO2, 7.5%) and hydrochloric acid (HCl, 9%). The systems are available in four capacity levels, producing 5, 10, 30 or 60 g/h of chlorine dioxide. This capacity is sufficient to treat up to 150 m³ of drinking water per hour at the maximum admissible concentration of 0.4 mg/l ClO2.
Features & Benefits
Removes both free Legionella and biofilm
90% of all bacteria, including Legionella inhabit the biofilm found in water distribution systems. Biofilm is a layer of organic matter that exists on the inside surface of water pipes. Chlorine dioxide diffuses into the biofilm and destroys it from within, whereas other disinfectants only attack the surface of the film.
No effect on water taste and smell
Chlorine dioxide does not form the toxic chloramines and haloforms that are a by-product of chlorine based disinfection methods. In effect, the water neither tastes nor smells of chlorine with the use of the Oxiperm Pro.
Compact design
The Oxiperm Pro has a built-in measuring application, which measures the residual chlorine dioxide in the water. It also has an integrated digital dosing pump making it an all-in-one compact solution.
Digital dosing
The Oxiperm Pro is a digital dosing system which makes it flexible, cost effective and eliminates the risk of overdosing.
Water pH adaptable
With chlorine dioxide, no particular pH value is needed, which makes it an extremely flexible disinfectant.
